After reading YogaGrrl's and astroknight's reviews of this disc, I am extremely intrigued. The danger hereis that, now I have high expectations of this disc. My hopes are that it can meet them.

Capsule Review

Well, it surely is not what I expected. Perhaps if you sit down to watch this one as an art film, with nointention of getting yourself off, it might be a real jewel. But it comes up lacking as a porno film.

By the end of this movie, I am convinced that Anders Manga is an egotistical and bombastic director who isout to make a statement. What the statement is, I have no fucking clue! But this is definitely pointed material with lots of symbolism. The kind of stuff you studied in college, except for the fact that thewomen are pleasuring themselves. Maybe if you want to watch David Lynch meets porno, this will work outwell for you. Me, on the other hand, I'm a simple man with simple desires... and they were left severelyunfulfilled by this film.

In the interest of further espousing my belief that production sensibilities and choices can contribute in subtle and artistic ways to the overall impact of adult entertainment (just as with any other form of entertainment), I thought I might touch a little bit on lighting. Many people make the incorrect assumption that the lighting behind your average well produced porn video is no more than turning on wall switches and opening some curtains. In most cases, this is simply not true. Lighting can be an extraordinarily complex and subtle artistic medium, contributing just as much as good camera work, the right outfits, and good locations. After all, in the most basic sense, where there is no light, there is no vision, and if we can't see what's happening, there's no reason for us to watch it. Moreover, careful control over and understanding of highlight and shadow and accentuation of form can make an otherwise beautiful woman even more beautiful, while lack of attention to these elements can result in performers who don't look their best. Unfortunately, VERY few producers in the adult industry understand how to take full advantage of lighting as a means of a clear, unfettered, yet flattering and even artistic presentation of the action they are recording. The result of this lack of full understanding is one of three methods of production: 1.) Bright, and functional lighting from all angles. This is a cheap, easy, and excellent way to go as it at least allows us to see the action. This type of lighting is most predominant and can be seen in most gonzo porn of today, including movies from Red Light District, Ana/Diabolic, Elegant Angel, etc. 2.) Poor, bare bones lighting. This type of lighting is, unfortunately pretty predominant as well. All but the best and most expensive broadcast quality video cameras require much more lighting than can be provided by your average ceiling mounted light fixture at home. An attempt to go with less than is required results in grainy picture quality, undesirable shadows and throngs of frustrated porn fans who can't see their favorite stars. 3.) Attempts at good and artistic lighting that fail miserably. One of the worst offenders in this arena is Jim Powers--but he is by no means the only one. This often involves the over-use of deep color, poorly executed attempts at accentuating form and establishing mood through highlight and shadow, and inadvertently asking too much of too little equipment. These scenes tend to be the worst not only for the lack of an acceptable AMOUNT of light, but also for upsetting the natural skin color of the performers in an amateurish attempt to use color. Clearly, for those who really don't understand what they are doing, my choice would be for them to always err toward option #1. HOWEVER, lighting, when well executed, can contribute to a scene in fantastic and subconscious ways. Although lighting is principally handled by the videographer (or in the case of film, the cinematographer) of a shoot, some directors are worth mention for their consistent and exceptional use of the medium for adult entertainment: Michael Raven has produced movies with exquisite lighting. John Stagliano has proven good understanding of how to make use of the medium--especially in his films. Antonio Adamo clearly spends a large amount of time on lighting, and uses it beautifully. Even principally gonzo director Rocco Siffredi has effectively used light as more than just illumination. While a full discussion of the intricacies of lighting design for entertainment is well beyond the scope of this review, it is my belief that like any other form of entertainment, production elements (both good and bad) can contribute in both profound and subtle ways to the overall impression of the product. For me, when someone does it really well--it's a joy to watch and worthy of praise and attention.

PREFACE:
Pandora Bazaar is a new kid on the block in the landscape of porn producers. They formed in September of 2001 and over the last year or so have brought a welcome sense of vitality and fresh ideas to the porn world, due in no small part to co-owner Anders Manga--a very accessible, intelligent, and young-at-heart fellow who has shown that he deeply respects the porn consumer. Anders seems to run his company without pretension and the result is an image of a free-spirited and creative group with ideas that attempt to explore human eroticism in less than conventional ways. Of late, they have produced some highly critically acclaimed videos, including Going Down, Girl Show, and Pandora's Box. Even if I come in with a bit of a bias against female masturbation (the theme of Girl Show #2), this was enough to make me sit up and take notice.

INTRODUCTION:
Girl Show #2 is the latest of Pandora's offerings. Its tagline is "The Art of Female Masturbation", and while I have to admit to being quite bored with most female masturbation scenes, I decided to give this one a whirl anyway out of curiosity for the different slant that Anders Manga might take on the topic. Both YogaGrrl and Astroknight have written excellent and very complimentary reviews of this title, and as always, I encourage you all to read as many perspectives as possible. What I might hate, they might love, and vice versa, and only you can decide who is most representative of your tastes. The cover certainly looks interesting enough with some nice flirty photos of Kylie Kurves and Pandora contract girl, Victoria Givens. I'm anxious to see if this one (as YogaGrrl has said) can both appeal to my libido and my intellect. I figure even if it only manages to appeal to one of them, the time spent writing this review will not be wasted.

SCENE 1: A Saucer Full of Dissolute
KYLIE IRELAND
The Girl
I have to admit that I don't tend to follow women like Kylie Ireland. The women featured in Girl Show 2 tend to be of the older variety--not old, but older. As seen in my porn tastes above, I tend to like younger women, or at least younger looking women. I'm well aware of who Kylie Ireland is of course, and I've seen her in action in the past, (she has a good scene by my tastes with Evan Stone in Michael Raven's Erotica) but she's never really appealed to me too much. Kylie looks like her typical self here, and is presented nicely with nice red hair and wearing some pink, silky nightwear.

The Action
Music starts playing as the camera explores Kylie sitting in a large chair in front of a television. The TV is showing her another girl masturbating in black and white. The lighting in the scene is interesting, but quite dark. There's still a clear enough picture of Kylie rubbing her tits and fingering her wet pussy, though even if the shadows are a bit extreme. The music, however, is very interesting and several cuts above that found in your average porn movie. Kylie starts slow with nipple rubbing and spreading her pussy lips, and builds the intensity through the scene as several fingers penetrate her pussy which responds with suitably sexy slurpy noises. The mood is one of watching a woman pleasing her self with the aid of what she sees on the screen rather than a woman performing a masturbation scene for the viewer--a nice touch. Kylie eventually comes, or at least pretends to cum before the scene fades to black.

The Gist
This scene was interesting, but for me, not a turn on. There was a very clear attempt made to establish mood with lighting, music and video post production techniques that I quite appreciated. I'm not sure how successful it was, however, as even though there was a human element there that I couldn't deny, the environment was cold there was a layer of detachment present that made it less interesting. I had a personal pet peeve against the fuscia colored lighting fixture that shot its beam up the back wall behind the chair, but it did offer an important element of background, even if it was a bit tacky. However, Kylie performed nicely, and there are some interesting close-up explorations of her pussy. Even though I wasn't into it, I can certainly see where some others might be.

SCENE 2: The Quiet Room
LOGAN LABRENT
The Girl
I don't think I've ever seen Logan before. She's a fairly sexy looking woman with long dark hair. She has exceedingly large, unnatural tits (which pretty well disgust me), but some fairly nice legs and a pair of nicely provocative eyes.

The Action
Logan is in what we assume to be a rubber room--a cell in some kind of mental ward. The tag line at the beginning of the scene is "You're never alone when you're a schizophrenic". After Logan teases the camera with her eyes and some slow explorations of her body, we see that she is actually in some kind of straight jacket on the floor of the room imagining herself masturbating. Images that intimate of Electro-shock therapy flit across the screen occasionally as the scene progresses and builds. The most interesting part of the scene comes when Logan comes--fake or real she made me believe it, and I always enjoy watching a female orgasm.

The Gist
This was an interesting scene. Unfortunately, the casting again bled all my sexual interest away and I had to rely on intellectual content to get me through it. Logan simply did not interest me, and had this scene been cast with someone who did, I probably would have enjoyed it much more. On the other hand, I didn't much relate to the sexuality of the situation presented. I think I understand it intellectually, in the sense that masturbation and orgasm provides stimulation and release that can serve to dull the pain of confinement and isolation, and that there is in some way a universal human element there that can serve to arouse us. Although I'm not sure that was the specific intent of the scene, what I did see was not clear enough and not well constructed enough to immerse me in its psychology. Again, I might have felt differently, however, with a cute performer who didn't brandish the ridiculous rack--but I doubt it.

SCENE 3: Things to do in the Waiting Room When You're Bored

Keri Windsor, if I'm not mistaken has been around for quite a while. I have to admit that she's the cutest girl so far in this movie. She has long blonde hair and a pretty face and body. She wears a red sweater over a red and white printed mini dress. August isn't too bad either, but she's not quite as interesting as Keri. August is a slightly chunkier girl with long, red, curly hair and a decent face. She wears a black sleeveless shirt, some black stockings and a plaid skirt.

The Action
Some playful, yet moody music plays as each girl sits across from the other in the waiting room of a doctor's office. Both read magazines, but Keri's pretty antsy and keeps sneaking looks at August. August catches her and instead of backing off, Keri decides it's a sign to open her legs and show August her pussy. August looks on with interest as Keri gets more and more adventurous. As with the other scenes in the movie so far, the music is quit interesting and fades more into the background as the sounds of masturbation and moans take more of a front seat--quite satisfactory. The Gist
This scene has the distinction of being the first in the video to actually turn me on. Perhaps it was because of the interaction between the two women, but I expect it was simply because of a more palatable premise and the presence of a genuinely cute girl in Keri Windsor. I was pretty aroused watching her, and watching her interact with August. I wished that there was more of an element of the danger of being caught present in the scene, as this thought never even crosses the mind of either woman. I think that if that aspect was heightened, there could have been potential for more sexual excitement. On the other hand, what was there worked nicely, and even though I don't usually go for female masturbation, there are exceptions, and this scene was one of them.

The last movie I saw Tina Tyler in was an Antonio Passolini "Transmission" (::groan::) called Bliss. It was a while ago, and my wife and I watched that one together. The Gist
Yep--there's no doubt about it. Tina is a sexy woman. The lighting in this scene was simplistic and unnecessarily dark. Although I appreciate the mood that was created with it, there was an overuse of strong color, and the illumination on Tina herself was one dimensional, and did not flatter her as well as it could have. Regardless of that, however, Tina rose above those shortcomings nicely and delivered a damn hot masturbation scene. I loved her black stockings and her sexual energy was undeniable. This again goes to show that for me, casting makes the difference.

Nikki is a very stripper-esque looking lady with glossy lips and shoulder length wavy hair. She's fairly decent looking and wearing a garter belt with black stockings underneath a bar maid's uniform.

The Action

The set is again adorned with lighting of fairly broad, strong color strokes and sets the mood of a dark bar at night. The Gist
This was another scene that did relatively nothing for me. Nikki had a nice body, but I didn't like her face or hair well enough to really be too interested. The bottle was an interesting touch, and certainly my lack of interest wasn't the result of Nikki's lack of trying. The First Word: AndersManga presents a female masturbation title with panache not seen since MichaelNinn's Diva series. It's a rathertame scene compared to the others in terms of explicitness, but it works becauseof the eroticism of the two strangers getting off a the same time. I can't say any of the interviews aremust sees, but they do answer many of the common questions. Aguy lends a hand to Victoria under her dress in the clip, "Fun WithFingers," and within 40-seconds brings her to the gushing that we wereexpecting to see in the first extra. Finally, there are four diaryentries that in a poetic way add some back story to scenes with KylieIreland, Logan, Tina, and Victoria/Kylie Curves. I think they're a nicetouch to round out the DVD. Overall, while there are a lot of extras onthis disc, they are very short -- it would have been nice to have a commentaryor something add some substance. A/V Quality: Other than the abundant use of lightning-quick editing (sometimes only twoseconds between cuts) and video effects, the A/V are excellent. If youhave a problem with non-linear editing, frequent black & white to colorswitching, strobe effects, and other creative approaches, you'll probably getfrustrated with this DVD quickly. On the positive side, the music, as I'vealready mentioned, is outstanding...probably one of the best porn soundtracksI've heard in years. The Last Word: While only a few of the sceneswere really top-notch, Tina's scene makes it well-worth picking up thisdisc. Audio/visual quality: This is a highly aesthetic production. The provocative images of Girl Show 2 serve as a creative tribute to the beauty and the insanity of female passion. The dynamic visual effects include jump edits, color shifts, monochrome footage, intercut text and more. These are generally concentrated in the early part of each scene. To the director's credit, the picture grows steadier as the masturbation gains momentum, providing sustained looks at the actresses' increasing excitement. The camera angles, lighting and mix of shots are all extremely pleasing. As with the original Girl Show, there are small problems with soft focus shifts, but they seem less prevalent this time around. The overall appearance is cleaner and sharper than the first volume.

The music seamlessly fits the action, yet it's also strong enough to stand as an independent soundtrack. It's vaguely Pink Floydish; discerning listeners might detect a subtle homage to The Wall in the first scene (and the resemblance of that scene's name to A Saucerful of Secrets is not unintentional). Some pieces include vocals, which are confined to the first portion of the scenes, where they nicely set the tone for what follows. The sex sounds enter the mix about halfway through each scene. There are minor audio blemishes—a few extraneous noises from the sets, occasional bumping against the microphone—but the clarity of the sex sounds is so incredible that it's easy to ignore the small flaws. The balance and volume are also excellent throughout.

First impression: The tag line doesn't lie; Girl Show 2 truly is "The Art of Female Masturbation."

Scene highlights: Girl Show 2 gathers five masturbation vignettes and one lesbian scene into a very cool arthouse-style movie. This is erotica with an edge; the dark and occasionally disturbing themes carry palpable undercurrents of emotional truth and power.

"Saucer Full of Dissolute"—Kylie Ireland occupies an armchair against a stark brick wall. She's fallen into a somber and pensive mood as she watches Serena masturbate on the television screen. Kylie's hands begin to drift along her body, echoing the images she sees. She petulantly pinches her nipples and slips her fingers down into her lacy white panties. Thumbs up: This is the first adult movie I've seen in quite a while that has addressed my intellect as well as my libido. Not that I immediately noticed this, since all five masturbation scenes are totally smoking! But some of the images and lyrics stuck with me for weeks after the first viewing. In the process of pondering them, I've realized how many interesting metaphors and allegories this disc contains. Girl Show 2 is a movie that works on several levels at once, from the deeply visceral to the astonishingly artistic.

Also notable: all of the actresses do an excellent job of acknowledging the camera without constantly playing to it. They look at us often enough to show they're alert and turned on; however, they don't hesitate to close or roll or defocus their eyes whenever pleasure overtakes them. The orgasms feel very real because of this. In addition, the overall technical qualities of this disc are noticeably stronger than what I saw in the earliest releases from this studio, including the first volume of Girl Show.

Thumbs down: The extras include quite an interesting collection of odds and ends. But personally, I would've liked to see more interviews, a behind-the-scenes featurette or director's commentary (or preferably all of the above). Some viewers watch porn just to get off, and this is a disc that will definitely assist that process. However, many of us are also very interested in the moviemaking methods, and the special features on this DVD don't provide much insight into that.

YogaGrrl's motherly advice: I would hope that everyone reading this review realizes that handguns and champagne bottles are not the safest choice of dildos. This is obviously fantasy material, and these are experienced professionals. If you happen to be kinky like me, and your body craves hard, smooth sensations like gunmetal or glass, I recommend Julian Snelling's stainless steel toys. I expect that the DVD will please a lot of people who are looking for something a little bit different, and I already know that it definitely pleases me.

Initial Reaction: Once again, Pandora Bazaar shows that they’re a studio to keep a close eye on. This is a great DVD!

Who Should Watch It : Anybody who likes artistic porn and female masturbation

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody who wants a plot and thinks some of the best porn is done by leaving the camera on a tripod while the cameraman leaves the room, and then considers it the finished product

Audio /Video Quality: The audio is clear and nicely varies a bit for artistic effect. There were a couple times I thought I heard a background noise or comment, but they were so short and the movie’s artistic enough that I thought it might have been intentional. The video is also very good, and shows Pandora moving away from some of the problems that plagued their earlier features. There’s some slight grain and a few soft focus problems, but very few shadows or lighting inconsistencies. This is easily Pandora’s best looking and sounding DVD so far.

Music: Each scene has its own unique music, and it’s so important to the scenes that in some ways it even reminds me of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, in both style and substance. Unlike almost every other porno out there, it often has lyrics, and is done well enough that it raises up every scene. Girl Show 2 has some of the best porno music out there, and is good enough that if Pandora continues with music like this, they offer a CD of their porn music.

Menus: The main menu is very simple and unanimated. The chapter menu lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each starlet.

The Feature: As with the original, Girl Show 2 is a collection of vignettes about female masturbation. Each scene is unique to itself and highly artistic in style.

Kylie Ireland, one of my all time favorite stars, starts things out in Saucer Full of Dissolute. Kylie’s sits in her chair and watches Serena masturbate on a black and white television. Kylie slowly masturbates without the aid of any toys, other than her belly chain with she slides around and into her pussy, as her concentration flips between Serena on the screen and her own pleasure. As time goes by, Kylie picks up the pace at a natural rate, and also changing positions a little. You don’t get to hear any of Kylie’s moaning through the early part of the scene, but the music is so well done and fitting here that I didn’t really care. It has kind of a Pink Floyd-ish feel to it, and is complete with lyrics. It’s a great start to the feature and shows that art and heat don’t always have to stay apart. There’s no denying Kylie’s enjoyment of herself throughout the entire scene, which goes a long way towards letting Anders Manga work his artistic magic around her without letting the scene suffer.

Logan LaBrent stars in The Quiet Room next as a schizophreniac in a padded room . Although I normally don’t care for overly implanted stars, she looks absolutely amazing in her corset, which matches her black hair perfectly, and looks just as good in her white straightjacket. Since there’s no toys allowed in the rubber room, Logan makes do as best she can with her fingers, which quickly get sopping wet. There’s obviously no need for toys for Logan to get off, and Anders nicely adds some artistic effect by having both of Logan’s personalities in the room at the same time, while also mixing in some hints of electroshock therapy. It’s another winner of a scene that shows that heat and art can live together just fine if the director knows what he’s doing.

August and Keri Windsor team up for Things to Do in the Waiting Room When You’re Bored to round out the first half of the movie. They start off on opposite sides of the waiting room, and apparently neither of them is to interested in reading magazines that were probably old when Jimmy Carter was president. Keri starts off giving August a few glimpses of her pantie-less pussy while brushing it lightly, and the moves things up a notch when she sees August is interested. August tries looking away, but as with most people who see Keri Windsor getting turned on, can’t look away. August eventually gives in to her naughty desires, and lets her fingers wander across her body. The girls go back and forth performing for each other, and even break out a couple toys to kick things up a little more. Not surprisingly, Keri is the more dominant of the two, but August’s innocence and curiosity drive the scene just as much as Keri’s intensity. The balance between the two makes this scene another great winner, as well as a quick cleanup at the end as the girls put things back together as they should be. It’s much more straightforward than some of the other scenes, but no less hot. It also does a great job of showing Anders Manga’s versatility as a director.

One Shot... & Down in the Purse takes off with Tina Tyler after the intermission. The scene starts off with a sense of something gone wrong, and probably something illegal. After passing time with things like reading and checking out her pistol, she opens her jacket to reveal a great leather corset and rubs the pistol across herself. She rubs the barrel across her tits and pussy before sliding the grip inside. It’s a slightly disturbing scene, but done extremely well, right down to Tina sitting in a chair and having a smoke afterwards while looking at the pistol lying on the bed. I’ll admit to being more than a little worried about this scene before watching it, but after watching it I’m only more impressed with Anders Manga’s direction and artistic eye. This just might be the most artistic scene in the entire movie.

Nikki Steele plays The Barfly in the penultimate scene. After cleaning up at the end of the night, Nikki, a cute brunette who looks great in a serving wench’s outfit, settles down on a barstool. She slowly plays with herself while stripping down to her black stockings and garter belt, and gradually ends up on the bar. It also has some decent artistic effect of having the action skip just like the old record that sounds like it’s playing in the background. Not surprisingly, it’s another winner of a scene.

Finally, Pandora contract girl Kylie Kurves teams up with Victoria Givens in The Class Cutter. Kylie is the class cutter, and Victoria Givens plays the crop duster’s wife who catchers her diddling herself in the middle of a meadow rather than attending class. She watches Kylie work herself over with a clear dildo while she plays with herself, and then moves over to join her when Kylie gestures to her. This makes this final scene a bit odd for the feature, as the lesbian sex aspect is there much more than the female masturbation aspect. The girls take turns working each other over with some obvious liking of each other. Surprisingly the toys never come out, but Kylie and Victoria never show any signs of needing them. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I wasn’t slightly disappointed with this scene, but my disappointment is entirely based on the lack of female masturbation rather than the sex itself. The girls appear to be nicely into each other, and put some good effort into working each other over. Different isn’t a bad thing here, it’s just different.

Pandora Bazaar and Anders Manga have scored again. Girl Show 2 seamlessly merges sex and art in almost every way, and is every bit as good if not better than the original. The girls are hot and obviously into taking matters in their own hands. The camera work is excellent through every scene, and almost always concentrated on just what I wanted to see. Although each scene is unique to itself in the feature, the entire feature’s also remarkably consistent. There isn’t a single bad scene here, and barely even an off moment through the entire feature. Girl Show 2 is one of the best features I’ve seen all year, and a must have for fans of female masturbation and artistic porn.

Extras: Of course there’s website information, since you can’t have a DVD without website information. Unlike almost every other DVD out there, Pandora actually makes this one fun and puts quite a bit of humor into the ad for their website.

First among the unique features, is Squirtula, a three and a half minute featurette with Victoria Givens enjoying herself on a couch. She works herself over with her fingers until she makes it so the couch needs a little professional cleaning. It’s a short extra, but a great one for this DVD that has some of Pandora’s usual great humor in it.

Next up is a music video for Anders Manga’s Glamour. Except for the clips from the movie, it’s every bit as good, if not better, than most of what seems to be shown on MTV. It’s another nicely unique feature that shows that sometimes risks are worth taking.

Great Outdoors is a thirty second featurette showing one of the benefits of being out in nature. Once again, Victoria Givens heads the feature, and might make herself a few fans for those of a particular fetish.

Interviews are also included with several of the stars. Keri Windsor talks about taking the good with the bad for about a minute and a quarter. Kylie Kurves talks about four minutes about her career in the adult business, what she likes in a person, and what she does for fun. Victoria Givens talks for about three and a half minutes about her time in the adult industry, who she’s looking forward to in the adult industry, her thoughts on Pandora, and what she does when she’s not in front of the camera. Unlike the other interviews, some of Victoria’s interview occurs on the set rather than just in the studio, and she comes across as an amazingly real person.

Fun with Fingers adds a bit more of Victoria’s squirting fun. It lasts about forty seconds and is a lot of fun. The more I’m seeing of Victoria, the more I’m liking her.

Finally, there’s four diary entries. Each entry is an extension of one of the scenes, with poetry acting as a diary entry from one of the characters. It’s another extremely unique extra, and one that I immediately liked. Although it might not sound like something you’ll like, give it a chance. I’m not much of a poetry person, yet this was one of my favorite extras.

Overall: Currently, most Pandora Bazaar titles can be found online for between $13 and $25, with many stores offering them around $15. This is a steal for what you get here.
