The Beast Within

Everybody has a dark side, and if we can't control it...it will destroy us. That's the message behind Jekyll & Hyde, a great looking (at least from a cinematography standpoint...not necessarily a DVD transfer one) feature from one of the best directors in porn, Paul Thomas. Filmed on location in Budapest and featuring some great period costumes and sets, Jekyll & Hyde once again shows how good an adult feature can be if the time and money is properly invested.

Jekyll & Hyde stars the pouty-lipped Taylor Hayes as Molly, the daughter of the recently deceased Dr. Jekyll. Taylor wants to find out what happened to her father, but little does she know that her obsession with finding out the truth will lead to her suffering the same fate that her father suffered.

The first half of the movie seems a little disjointed, as much of the sex seems to be there just so the director can make sure that non-interested viewers don't fast forward through too much of his film. There is an orgy scene during the first half of the movie in a brothel which primarily contained a cast of European adult stars, so I had trouble identifying who was whom. We also get several flashback scenes of Dr. Jekyll before he died (played by Mike Foster), in which he is in Mr. Hyde mode and is fooling around with some of the local women (his first coupling is with Kate More, and his later one was with a blonde who may or may not be Genevieve...I must admit I had a hard time figuring out who most of the European cast was).

Where this movie really steams up the screen (and really turned this reviewer on) was during the second half of the film when Taylor starts experimenting with her father's potions and starts turning into her own version of the monster. This, of course, is everyman's fantasy...that an attractive woman he knows who has always been sweet and innocent will suddenly turn into a seductive nymph. Taylor starts her escapades taking on Ian Daniels and Bobby Vitale in a dark alley one night, and continues her naughty ways the next evening with Frank Gunn.

Taylor gets her final (and the movie's final) sex sequence with Julian, but unfortunately she is more in the sweet and innocent mode in this coupling than the nasty girl she has been in the previous segments. As a result, Jekyll & Hyde both starts off slow and ends a bit slow, but is really sizzling in the middle portion of the film. Had Taylor's character not taken quite as long to begin her transformation, and had we been allowed to see more of the "evil" side of her, this film might have been one of the highlights of the past year on DVD. As it is, it's still a fun ride.

The video transfer to DVD is not very good, as seems to be the case with a lot of shot-on-film transfers these days (see other Vivid titles, Wicked's Dream Quest, etc.). Hopefully, the adult DVD studios will take the time and money to start making these transfers come out a little better...as it is, they are not turning out much better than the VHS copies. On the other hand, the 5.1 audio sounded fairly good on my system, although for some reason the last half hour or so of the film seemed to suddenly cause a lot of pops and squeaks on my system. The extras here are what you have come to expect from a Vivid DVD...in other words, a nice handful, but not many that have to do with the movie you have purchased. There are two Taylor Hayes bonus scenes which feature her in threesome action (with another guy and another girl in each segment), so those were fun to watch.

Overall, if you like a little story to your porn, you can't go wrong with Jekyll & Hyde. One of the advantages of this film is that because it was shot on location in Budapest it has an appealing look and feel to it that you don't get in other big studio releases from the adult industry. And as with most Vivid titles, this is a great one to curl up with your girlfriend or wife to watch...especially on a dark and stormy night.

Kate More Is Hotter Than Hayes!

If you're a Paul Thomas fan or enjoy couples features, this is definitely a must see. The women are mostly Euro-sluts, hot looking Hungarian blondes who do everything. And it has great Victorian lingerie costumes. To be sure, this film has the usual period porno problems. Shot and set in Budapest, unlike London in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, some characters speak Hungarian (with subtitles) and others English (with heavy accents in some cases). Hyde is Hungarian, but Hayes is not. The romantic music is silly as well. And the adaptation is in some ways clumsy. Following in the traditions of B-pictures like "Dracula's Daughter", this film tells the story of Jekyll's daughter, Molly, who returns from school and takes up his experiment, soon becoming a Mrs. Hyde herself named Flora. Jekyll Hyde (Mike Foster) speaks from beyond the grave in voice over about his own story. We never learn why his daughter wants to following in his footsteps, however. Thomas adds a plot of his own, involving Molly and Jack (Julian), her servant.

Apart from his all too characteristic of porn lapses, the film is very good at using the period setting to act out some pretty risque stuff , mostly fetish and light s&m, as a way to view relations between the sexes.

Taylor Hayes gives a great performance, taking risks by appearing in rather ugly form as Mrs. Hyde (gross make up and yellow teeth). The real scene stealer, however, is Kate More, who plays a prostitute named "Happy" ("Bridget" in the credits) favored by Molly's father. The first scene begins in a Victorian brothel and then cuts to a dungeon where More has her guy strung up in chains as she sucks him off. She lets him down, takng him in a number of positions, including anal missionary, and then strings him back up while she gets a letter from Hyde with a lot of cash. She leaves him handcuffed.

More returns in a later equally hot scene with Hyde, told in flashback to Molly by Bridget (More). Again, she takes a pounding anal fuck from a variety of positions. She is not the prettiest girl around, but she is among the sluttiest.

Before that, we get another bordello orgy, with two threeways. Two blonde women on one man, and two men on one brunette woman (who wears a not very sexy eyepatch). A far amount of anal in both groups. Then there is a brief scene in which Hayes masturbates in front of a mirror. She goes off into town at night where she picks up two sailors (Ian Daniels and Bobby Vitale) and fucks them both in an alleyway. She gives a really convincing greedy, deep throat blowjob to each guy.

In the next scene, Hayes as Flora picks up her father's friend Utterson (Frank Gunn) and takes him home where she whips him with a riding crop. He is turned on. Her costume here is great. A better than Victoria Secrets bustier. She poses for him on a couch as he jacks off, and they fuck and go through the usual positions. The only disappointment in Hayes' performance is hat she does not do anal.

The next scene is another flashback about Hyde, this time picking up a prostitute in a park and having sex with her outside (at night). The really daring thing here is that he strangles her to death at the end of the scene after they have sex. So the darkness of the original plot is able to be incorporated into the film (although the sex itself is not rough). Hayes as Molly decides not to pursue her alternate ego any further, burns her father's notes, and then kisses Julian. A hot sex scene in a stairwell follows, with Hayes wearing another great bustier. Hayes's full breasts and luscious lips along with her ability to look rather with desire when she is Flora make for a good performance in a film with a disturbing plot. We have here a rather dark picture, perhaps post-AIDS, in which sexual desire for both men and women leads to depravity, disease and death.

Despite the generous extras, technically, I find Vivid disappointing, a far cry from the far superior VCA DVDs. Although there are multiple angles in a few sequences, they are either very similar to the director's cut or they're simply poorly shot and not worth watching. There is also some pixilation, and the film has a grainy quality (this is perhaps intentional on Thomas's part, but it doesn't work well).

The technical design of this DVD is especially annoying. You enter a virtual room with arrows If you go into one of the windows/rooms, and, unless you like surprises, you'll find this to be a pain in the ass as none of the rooms is labelled. Once you go in and hit the menu selection, things get easier when you return to the room when interactive menu comes up on the bottom right and the much easier to use manual menu comes up on the bottom left. But another annoying thing is that when going into these rooms, if you hit on "menu" you go back to the original choice instead of back to the manual menu. Vivid could do a lot better in the design department. It's great to have all these extras, but they should be much easier to access and navigate your way through.

Dr. Jekyll and Mrs. Hayes is one of the very first pornos i ever bought. I always like a film to have some kind of story to it, rather then just straight fucking. With great costumes a great shooting location and a beautiful Taylor Hayes, you cant go wrong!
