Lackluster In Red

I had high hopes for LUST IN RED when I saw Rebecca Lord and Gwen Summers on the cover. Both girls are among my favorite adult stars, and both have been unfairly underrated despite some outstanding work in the past. Well, after watching this flick from beginning to end, I regret to report that this movie does not do justice to their normally excellent sexual skills, and in fact, is probably one of the worst of their respective careers.

Directed rather crudely by Jon Yuma, this title has nothing to do with the color red (indeed, the video quality is so washed out that it's hard to see any thing other than shades of gray) and plays like a third rate gonzo compilation. It seems that quality control in video production has dropped down a notch or two following Jill Kelly Productions' immensely successful DVD MY PERFECT 10's [sic], and WEB MISTRESS starring Asia Carrera and Star E. Knight (a disc I very much enjoyed and reviewed favorably). The sound is poorly captured and the camera work is surprisingly amateurish. As if to reflect the DVD's contents, the box cover is also unimaginatively designed, with Gwen on one side and Rebecca on the other separated by a big black bar with the movie's title and credits. Other than the color scheme, the packaging is as generic as you can get and so is the film.

After a very long opening credit sequence comprised of snippets of the action to come, Olivia Del Rio (who by far gives the best performance in this video) approaches Ian Daniels in the first vignette entitled "Bike Bitch." What dialogue there is to set up the story is largely inaudible, but that won't affect your attraction to Ms. Del Rio, who looks hot in a bikini/biker's outfit. Ian eats her out on the seat of his bike, but the positioning of the actors and camera angles make much of it difficult to see (a common crime committed throughout the production). We definitely getter better footage of Olivia sucking on his cock, which is performed while he is seated on the tailgate of a pickup. After a few seconds of tit fucking and more fellating, they get back on the motorcycle for some missionary and doggy action. This sort of thing goes on for a while, before she gets screwed reverse cowgirl on the garage floor. The scene fades out following an oral cumshot.

"Le Jardin" (which means "the garden" for those of you who know that snootiest of all foreign languages) features curly-haired brunette Maeva Exel in a threesome with Brian Surewood and Kevin Long. Despite the hard work by the participants, this is the least attractive scene in the flick, due in part to the lack of female (or male, for that matter) eye-candy. There is not even the pretense of build-up to this scene, other than the fact that they are surrounded by plants in what appears to be a well-landscaped backyard. The threesome changes positions and fucking locales frequently, going to a hot tub and eventually indoors for a double penetration shot, which was initially attempted outdoors. The lack of emotion, the absence of dirty talk, and the general feeling of boredom by the actors make this scene forgettable, despite the dual cum facial.

Ian Daniels and Michael J. Cox win the hot babe lottery when they get to tag team Rebecca Lord, who looks as lovely as ever in a tight black dress. She is subjected to an interrogation after she's caught stealing something which resembles a sound card (don't ask!). Of course, after a round of negotiations, she finds herself spread out on a pinball machine sucking away at Cox's cock while Ian eats her out. The videography here is unattractive, which is not to say that Rebecca looks bad, but the images are poorly lit and eye-soringly garish. Like the previous scenes, this one switches from one unusual setting (the two guys take her from both ends while she lies between two stools) to another, but the sexual conduct is, again, strangely bloodless. This is probably the first time ever I've been bored by a sex scene featuring Ms. Lord.

A mediocre solo segment with Gwen Summers is up next, where milk and a yellow dildo are used throughout. Gwen is cute, but the scene is by-the-numbers. Next, please...

A throwaway foreign segment featuring Verena and "Two Czech Guys" makes one pine for a Private Video or a Marc Dorcel import from Wicked. Need I repeat that the picture is as color-less as the action? All the standard positions are assumed, including a DP which is nearly invisible due to the shadows. Verena is cute, but is as emotionally distant as they come, at least, in this flick.

The one saving grace is the Rebecca Lord/Gwen Summers/Ian Daniels threesome, titled rather obviously "Pornstars At Play." It's not a great, or even above average scene by any means, but it's a pure pleasure to see the two hot bodies undress each other, although their scene is unfortunately often captured in black and white as seen from the point of view by Ian's video camera. Rebecca muff dives on Gwen, who overacts to the point of ridiculousness. Perhaps her over-the-top reactions were intended to satirize the well-known faking of orgasms in most (if not all) adult movies, but within this context, it's just distracting. The two ladies go down on him for a while, and share the occasional kiss when their tongues meet. However, there is very little three-way conduct going on. For the most part, Cox takes them on one at a time while the other captures the action (poorly) with his camera. There are also moments where the girls seem to be looking for direction, in the same way the Saturday Night Live cast members frequently glance at their cue cards. After pumping both girls as they lie on top of each other, he spills a small load on Rebecca's ass and the credits roll to some obnoxious, blaring rock instrumental.

The extras are composed of "BTS" (Behind The Scenes) segments for 100% HAVEN and a Photo Gallery for a few other of JKP productions. It's a bit below average when you consider the quality of extras we get from a studio like Wicked or even Vivid. At first, I wondered why we didn't get a documentary on the making of LUST IN RED, and then I remembered that I didn't care enough about the main feature to miss it.

I completely agree with the site review for this film. Lust in Red could have had a lot more going. And in my mind, if you are going to put so much talent in one place, do a little more work on the basics (lighting, sound, story, sexual direction, transitioning of clips, etc.) Most of the film is done rather amateurish.

Mind you, its not a total loss. There is one reason to pick up the film and its without a doubt the last chapter "Pornstars at Play". Now, mind you, by this point in the film I was a bit disappointed in that every chapter started well enough, but fell short of any glory in the end. The last scene started well also and by then I lacked enthusiasm having scene the earlier chapters. As such, the film's only redemption is by throwing these two hotties together. The final scene with Rebecca on top of Gwen while Ian takes turns inside each of them is quite good. And compared to the rest of the film, its stellar. Both the girls seems completely into it as they get driven in turn while kissing and fondling each other. You barely even notice Ian in the scene.

Aside from that last chapter/scene Lust in Red is definitely washed-out. Fans of Rebecca Lord and Gwen Summers might want to pick it up just for their collections.
