Though her stage name evoked beaches and bikinis, August was born in circumstances far removed from the sun-soaked fun of Florida or California. Ames grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada, and was a shy, quiet high schooler. She came into her own during her penultimate year in school, becoming a cheerleader and then model, and at age 19 decided to click on a "Become a performer" link she found on a porn site. "I never, ever thought I'd make a name for myself; I thought I'd just make a few extra bucks," she told Adult DVD Talk. While by her own admission August's initial scenes were not her strongest work ("My first five scenes were just terrible, I believe"), she soon settled into a groove. One of her first big performances came in Friends and Family 4 in 2013, and her first solo cover arrived with Porn Pros' Perfectly Natural 2.

She continued to grow as a performer and also became a familiar face in Wood Rocket's YouTube interview mashups, recounting stories and insights from her career. "I learned that your sexuality is constantly changing," Ames said in 2014. "If you get satisfied with one thing, there's always something else that will satisfy you sexually."

Just 23 at the time of her death in December 2017, Ames was still at the height of her powers as a performer, appearing in more than 60 movies and scenes in that final year alone. She was known for a lean and elegant all-natural look that dazzled in scores of spotlight performances, including Racks, Jay's POV and Threesome Fantasies Vol. 2, one of her final big hits. Her talents earned her two AVN Fan Awards: Best Newcomer (2015) and Most Spectacular boobs (2017).
