A Lasse Braun Biography

Early Life and Fight against Censorship

Lasse Braun was born in 1936 in Algiers. After graduating from the prestigious Swiss "Institut Montana Zuegerberg", he enrolled in the Law School of the Milan State University in 1955. Having passed all the exams by 1960, Braun was struggling to publish his doctorate dissertation "The Judiciary Censorship in the Western World". This controversial theme allowed him not only to express his personal views on the history of sexual repression, but also to expose the "social damage" provoked by legalistic censorship in the modern world. In turn his radical propositions angered the Academic establishment who decided to "censor" his thesis on censorship. Since then Lasse Braun wanted to fight censorship and make the adult business legal in all corners of the world.

Braun's ideas surrounding sex and pornography have been inspired by the likes of 18th century pornographers like Restif de la Bretonne, who was the first author to coin the word "pornography" and to describe a comprehensive range of sexual variations. Another source of inspiration consists of the rituals and orgiastic festivals of the Dionysus cult, as well as ceremonies in veneration of Aphrodite. According to Braun, censorship itself is obscene, and the suppression of sexual desire over the centuries has led to psychological damage and frustration. He has been quoted as saying, "I make porn movies for two reasons: first of all because I'm fond of sex and secondly because it is forbidden."

Loop Production

Early on, Braun took considerable risks by producing hardcore movies in Spain and France. He repeatedly had to change his nationality, use various aliases and move around often to avoid being arrested on obscenity charges. He was able to avoid detection when crossing borders by taking advantage of his father's position as a diplomat. He even planned to use these tactics to smuggle his first feature film, Penetration, into the Cannes Film Festival. Penetration was the first hard sex film ever shown at the Cannes Film Festival and it was screened for seven consecutive nights to in an 800-seat theater in central Cannes. Thousands of people out on the street had to be contained by French policemen in order to protect the lucky ones who got inside on time. Thereafter, no other film ever attained such a phenomenal success at the Cannes Film Festival.

Lasse Braun started a movie company called AB Beta Film in Stockholm. In order to fund his feature films, he began producing short adult movies, called loops, in the USA. They were about 8-to-15 minutes each, in color, first shot in Super 8mm and then in 16mm. The first of his loops, titled "Golden Butterfly", was a self-portrait, which he shot in 1966 in Monte Carlo with a girlfriend. She was dressed as a Japanese (Madame Butterfly) and Braun as a naval officer (Pinkerton). But instead of singing Puccini's melodies, they did the unthinkable: they made love in her boudoir without hiding anything of what makes sex so luscious and irresistible.

Among Braun's other titles were: "Blow-up '70," "Chains of Eroticism," "Sex on the Motorway," "Susie la Blonde," "Dream of a Nymphomaniac". Through his Swedish company AB Beta, he distributed those products with his logos: Eros Film and Ciro's Film. In 1968, since the demand for his illegal porn loops was growing everywhere in Europe, Lasse Braun purchased the necessary equipment to set up his own color film lab. That was the world's first modern movie lab exclusively dedicated to the mass-production of pornography.

At the end of 1969 Braun traveled to the Caribbean and shot the first of his series of 3 short movies, titled "Tropical." using the native cast. This unprecedented exotic product enjoyed a sweeping success. He continued to shoot a number of 3-title series such as "Top Secret" (Spain), "Nymphomania" (Sweden/Denmark) "Oh! Paris" (France), "The Vikings" and "Casanova" (both in period costumes, another first,) "Discovering Orgasm," and several more.

American Connection

In January 1971 Rueben Sturman, a major American distributor of books and magazines, visited Braun in Copenhagen. Sturman was already manufacturing the first prototypes of modern "peep-show machines,"--solid wooden boxes with a Super 8mm projector inside, which allowed the public to watch about two minutes of an adult movie for 25 cents. As there were only few adult loops in the US, Sturman had privately screened Lasse Braun's loop titled "Delphia the Greek" which showed for the first time a double penetration. He loved it and decided to meet the notorious European film maker. The two become life-long friends and business partners.

Stimulated by Braun's success, Sturman adopted the same strategy: popularization of pornography on a mass level in order to force legalization. In March 1971, Braun imported 45 of his own loops on 16mm masters into the USA to duplicate them in local underground labs and use in "peep-show machines. According to the deal, Braun also delivered the 45 artworks for 4-color printing of box covers in the USA.

Penetration a.k.a French Blue

In 1973 Lasse Braun filmed his first feature film, originally titled "Penetration", later changed into "French Blue." In addition to the cartoon by great French satirist Sine', produced by Braun's Dutch production company, the film also showed four of Braun's most amusing loops shot between 1970 and 1972, and showcased scintillating Brigitte Maier, Braun's star and protégée.

In 1974-75, Braun shot his masterpiece "Sensations" with the financial backing of Rueben Sturman who in return got all theatrical rights for North America. But first they screened "Sensations" at the Cannes Festival of 1975 in order to check out the public reaction. The outcome surpassed even the wildest imagination. Every night the crowd jammed the 800-seat theater. In America, Sturman organized a lavish campaign, and opened "Sensations" in New York on November 4th, 1975, with an unprecedented full-page ad in The New York Times (Sunday: November 2nd, 1975 issue) After shooting two more Dutch feature films in 1976, Braun moved to London in the beginning of 1977. While busy with the movement "Anarchy In The UK", he filmed a series of 12 longer loops in London, ("Locked Out," "Lotus Flower," "English Schoolgirls," "Satin Party," "Country Life," among them.). He also shot various 3-title series for his Dutch enterprise such as "Shocking," "Young Exhibitionists," "Midnite Sodomite," "Ice Cream," "Parisiana," "Alice's Baby," "Hooked on Sex," and "VIP."

The Afterglow

In June 1977 Lasse Braun retired from the adult business, leaving his heritage to the new generations including his son, Axel Braun, who became a renowned director of adult films in his own right. Lasse became involved in numerous scientific researches, but he came back to moviemaking on several occasions. In 1980-1981 he made two more real sex movies in Europe and America. In 1985-1998 he made a total of 12 video-features, edited for adult sex and cable. In 1991-1992 he produced/directed two soft-erotic mini-series in Europe, and five soft-erotic video-features in America. In 1999, he dedicated the whole year to writing of "Lady Caligula", his first major novel written in English. He also appeared in the TV series "Pornography: A Secret History of Civilization" in 1999, and a documentary about himself, "I, the King of Porn... the Adventurous Life of Lasse Braun" in 2001.
